This young cricketer from Manchester did not renew the golden age of music – he lives it.
With his softening, retro aesthetics and a voice straight from the 50s, Elliot James Ray first captured the hearts by sharing classic cards in the Dictok in 2019. His vintage sound will quickly go viral and attract him.
Now, from his Manila show on February 2, Elliott proves that there is still a place of timeless love in today’s music scene.
“I feel like today. We are a little more examined about the people who do it (Love Dovi),” he shared during a press conference. “So I think (my music) is often for people who want to get love in the 1950s,”
His first single, ‘I think they are calling this love, abandoned in July last year and put 20 million YouTube streams and 69 million on the spotfly. The ‘Boy in Love’ came in November, and confirmed 1.2 million YouTube streams and 3 million in Spotify.
Despite his increasing popularity, Elliott agreed that it was time to embrace his identity as an artist. “It took me some time to show the world to who I am,” he reflected. “But because I am now, I feel very good for that.”
Keeping it naturally
Born in Manchester on old school music, love began at a young age, thanks to his parents for introducing him to legends like Elvis Prasley and Patti Holly. But until his teenage years, when his voice received its deep, Velvetty tone, he leaned on the retro sound.
“I sang these songs on the streets of my hometown,” he recalled. “People loved it … it prompted me to dig deep into the type.”
His girlfriend then prompted him to keep his “real self” online, which is a move that changed everything. “This changed my whole thing and changed my whole life. I am doing something I enjoy and I am glad to do it. That’s important.”
When it comes to writing the song, Ria D has refused to force creativity. “There is no real organization for a writing session. What happened.
Some of the songs like ‘I think they are calling this love’ took several hours of testing and error. Others, like ‘boy in love’… happened. “It took three to four hours to write (one), whereas ‘Boy in Love’ was written in 20 minutes. An idea that came now, I think it was in the bathroom at the time, and Baslain came to my head, ”he said.
Feel the Philippines
Prior to his Manila show, Elliot assured not only a concert but also an experience, he presented.
His collection featured three songs that were not published, and his nostalgia was mixed with his nostalgia and emotional setlist. Although his first time to join the Philippines as an artist, he immediately felt the country’s warmth.
“You are some of the most welcome people you have met,” he said. “I am trying to take a part of its part. That is important to me.”
But relationships with the retro-pop artist’s Philippines go deeper than a tour stop. His grandfather lived in Pangasin’s Bambang for a decade, Ria spent time as a child, and immersed in the local community.
“I learned a lot from you. I took it back to England,” he said. “This changed my full view of life.”
What to brew?
An album is on the horizon. But first, some singles.
“We have wrapped four singles in London for the past two weeks,” Eliot revealed. “We spent a lot of time to ensure that they are aligned, so they end on the album … or we will see a small EP.”
Now, this is about strategy. “These tracks are ready. One thing is to make sure they land the right order and how they want to. ”
As for cooperation with a Philippines artist? The Nostalgic hitmaker is open. “I will definitely consider working with a Philippine artist. I think this should be meaningful, ”he said. “We need to find someone who matches the style. But I don’t think it is very difficult to do it.”
When the inspiration comes, he will not put himself in the box. Instead, he speaks life and his favorite movies.
“We take ideas no matter what happens all day,” he explained. “We’ll see a movie. A line may stand alone. We hear it and think ‘it may be a song’.”
As for the type he has to go? Classic. “We see a lot of old school Rome-comz to keep things in accordance with sound.”
It is not surprising that Eliot James Ray carries his own space at one time, with the impacts of mixing nostalgia, spontaneousness and cinema storytelling.
With new music, this is a beginning.
