He noted that the allocation for beneficiaries is still based on the 2011 census, which has now been more than a decade. The NFSA provides protection by up to 75 per cent of the rural population and up to 50 per cent of the urban population to get high subsidized foodgrains through the target public distribution system (TPDs). Based on the 2011 census, it is about 81.35 crore people.
Currently, the government provides 5 kg of free foodgrains per person per month under the Food Security Act.
“For the first time in the history of independent India, the decade -in -law has been delayed for more than four years. It was originally planned in 2021, but there is no more clear about when the census will be conducted,” Gandhi said.
He pointed out that budget allocation reports that the renewed census is unlikely to be completed this year.
As a result, about 14 crores eligible Indians did not have the benefits under the NFSA, Gandhi added.
“The government is mandatory for the government to prioritize the census as soon as possible, and all eligible persons ensure that they are guaranteed under the NFSA. Food safety is not a privilege. This is a fundamental right.”
The government has extended the distribution of free foodgrains under Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (BMGK) from January 1, 2024.
