Miami Marlins’ star pitcher, Sandy Alcantara, will be sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to a recent Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Expressing his determination, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner stated in a social media post, “I give this game my all. I give this city my all, and so I promise I will not take a day off as I push to be back better than ever.”

Alcantara first experienced discomfort in his arm during an outing against Washington on September 3, where he pitched eight innings. Initially labeled as a forearm strain, the injury was later diagnosed as a UCL sprain, often necessitating Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery. The timeline for his return remains uncertain, as he had hoped to rejoin Miami for a late-season playoff push.

Unfortunately, Alcantara faced forearm tightness after a rehab outing with Triple-A Jacksonville on September 21, ultimately ending his season.

Speaking to reporters last month before a game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Alcantara expressed his frustration, saying, “Very frustrating for me, a guy who likes to compete. I feel sorry for the fans, my family, my son, my friends because I’m not going to be out there this year. Just try to be ready for next year, I don’t know. Stay positive.”

In 28 starts this season, the 28-year-old Alcantara posted a 4.14 ERA and completed three games. The right-hander accumulated a record of 7-12 over 184 2/3 innings, with 151 strikeouts and 48 walks.

The Marlins secured a postseason spot as the National League’s second wild-card team but were ultimately swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in their three-game Wild Card Series.

Miami’s current rotation features left-handers Jesús Luzardo, Braxton Garrett, and Trevor Rogers, along with 20-year-old right-hander Eury Pérez.
