In Independence, Two Parsons Viking Doubles Teams Secure Spots at State Tennis Tournament

During the KSHSAA 4A Girls Tennis Regional Tournament in Independence, Parsons’ tennis teams achieved significant success. Sydney Schibi and Bri Boucher secured third place, while Brookelynn Barger and Kadence Ball claimed fourth place.

Schibi and Boucher began the regional tournament with victories over Iola and Chanute. However, they faced a formidable challenge in the Kippenberger sisters from Independence in the semifinals, leading to a closely contested match. Parsons head coach Jane Posch praised their performance, saying, “When they reached the semifinals, they played one of their best matches of the year.” Although they had a strong second set, they ultimately lost 7-5. In the third-place match, they defeated their fellow Parsons teammates, Ball and Barger, with a score of 6-0, 6-4.

Posch emphasized the strategic decision to pair Schibi and Boucher for doubles, stating, “Putting them together gives them a stronger chance to medal at the state tournament. This is the path they wanted to take. It’s paid off.”

Ball and Barger also had a commendable performance, winning their initial matches against Coffeyville and Labette County. Similar to Schibi and Boucher, they faced a tough Independence team in the semifinals. Their journey included a challenging match with the Carnahans from Labette County, which they won in a super tiebreaker.

Parsons’ sole singles competitor, Ariel Adams, displayed determination but lost in a tiebreaker in the first round to Bryleigh Hymer of Fort Scott. Hymer went on to secure sixth place and a state tournament berth.

The KSHSAA 4A State Tennis Championships are set to commence in Winfield, with the possibility of one of Parsons’ teams medaling. Posch expressed optimism about the teams’ current form and their prospects at the state tournament.
