On Thursday, three Romanian players took the courts for their second-round matches at the Transylvania Open. Out of these, two emerged victorious, securing spots in the quarterfinals. Notably, Ana Bogdan, seeded fifth, displayed exceptional resilience in a marathon match against Nikola Bartunkova, ultimately prevailing 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in a contest that lasted nearly three and a quarter hours.

Bartunkova, the 17-year-old Czech talent, was participating in her inaugural WTA tournament in Romania and had already notched her first career tour-level win against Dayana Yastremska. Her performance against Bogdan reflected this newfound confidence.

In the initial set, Bartunkova managed to gain the upper hand after a series of breaks, ultimately securing the set. However, Bogdan refused to yield, giving her all despite the setback. The 30-year-old fought valiantly and clinched the second set in a tense tie-break, forcing the match into a decisive third set.

In the final set, it all boiled down to composure under pressure, and it was Bogdan who demonstrated superior nerve, emerging victorious in the final game of regulation play. Overall, Bogdan finished with only four more points than Bartunkova, tallying 107.

Currently ranked 73rd in the world, Bogdan is set to face fourth-seeded Rebeka Masarova for a coveted spot in the semifinals. Masarova secured her place in the quarters with a victory in the round of 16 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Elena-Gabriela Ruse, the second Romanian contender, emerged triumphant in her second-round match against Hungary’s Anna Bondar, prevailing 7-6(4), 6-2 in just shy of two hours.

Unfortunately, Jaqueline Cristian’s journey at the Transylvania Open came to a close in the round of 16. In a grueling match lasting over two and a half hours, Eva Lys staged an impressive comeback against Cristian, ultimately winning 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

In other matches, Tamara Korpatsch, hailing from the same nation as Lys, secured her spot in the quarterfinals by staging an upset against the eighth-seeded Jodie Burrage, triumphing 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(5). Joining Korpatsch in the Transylvania Open quarterfinals is Jil Teichmann, who secured a convincing victory against Emiliana Arango, winning 6-3, 6-3.
