Pam Shriver’s Insight into Stefanos Tsitsipas’ 2023 Struggles

The year 2023 has seen Stefanos Tsitsipas, the 25-year-old Greek tennis sensation, facing some daunting challenges. According to former tennis star Pam Shriver, Tsitsipas might have encountered what athletes often refer to as “hitting the wall,” which could explain his recent struggles.

Tsitsipas started the year on a high note by reaching the Australian Open final, coming tantalizingly close to achieving his dream of winning a Grand Slam and ascending to the world No. 1 ranking. However, his aspirations were dashed when he suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of the formidable Novak Djokovic in the Melbourne Park final. Following this loss, Tsitsipas has struggled to replicate that level of success, with his sole victory in 2023 occurring at an ATP 250 event in Los Cabos.

Pam Shriver, who made her first Grand Slam final at the age of 17 in 1978 (albeit without clinching the title), shared her perspective on Tsitsipas’ struggles. Shriver noted the turbulence both on and off the court, including social media posts, coaching situation rumors, and his relationship with Paula Badosa. Drawing from her own experience, Shriver emphasized the challenges of relentlessly pursuing the top spot in the rankings and the eventual exhaustion that it can bring. In her career, she spent years ranked between three and seven globally while chasing tennis legends such as Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Monica Seles before reaching a personal “wall” around the ages of 27-28.

Shriver suggested that Tsitsipas might be experiencing a similar disheartening phase as he observes the rise of young talents like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Jack Shelton. Notably, Tsitsipas underwent coaching changes during the year. He initially parted ways with coach Mark Philippoussis before reuniting after Wimbledon, only to part ways again following the US Open. Tsitsipas has now returned to working with his father, Apostolos.

Commenting on the coaching carousel, Shriver expressed reservations about Philippoussis returning a third time and suggested it might be time for a different approach.
