Temperamental Andrey Rublev Seeks to Improve His Demeanor After Defeating Dimitrov at Shanghai Masters

In the Shanghai Masters, Russia’s Andrey Rublev overcame Grigor Dimitrov with a 7-6, 6-3 victory in the semifinals, setting the stage for a final clash with powerhouse server Hubert Hurkacz.

Rublev, the tournament’s top-ranked player at seventh in the world, occasionally displayed frustration during the match, even expressing annoyance at a hovering drone early on. He admitted that his outbursts weren’t helping, calling them ‘ugly,’ and recognizing the challenge of maintaining control during high-pressure semifinal matches.

The 25-year-old fought his way out of a 0-40 deficit in the first set, eventually holding serve for 3-3 in a game that lasted 10 minutes. Rublev seized a crucial break opportunity to reach 6-5, but Bulgaria’s Dimitrov, the 18th seed, broke back immediately as Rublev served for the set. Rublev secured the set in a tiebreak, winning after Dimitrov hit a forehand wide.

Dimitrov, aged 32, showed impressive form but was unable to maintain his lead in the second set, allowing Rublev to break back for a 2-2 tie. Rublev broke again to claim victory as Dimitrov faded.

Rublev, with 14 titles to his name, described reaching the Shanghai final as ‘special’ but expressed sympathy for Dimitrov, whom he regards as a friend.

In the first semi-final, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, the 16th seed, powered past the United States’ Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-4, serving 14 aces and facing no break points on his serve.

Hurkacz acknowledged Korda’s challenging play but managed to secure his spot in the final. Hurkacz, who has six titles in his career, including a victory at the Miami Masters in 2021, now faces Rublev in what promises to be an exciting showdown.
