Leylah Fernandez Secures Hong Kong Title, Reflects on Challenging Journey

At the age of 21, Leylah Fernandez seized a moment to express her profound gratitude to all those who have been part of her journey after clinching her first WTA title in over a year and a half. This significant victory came on a Sunday when Fernandez conquered Katerina Siniakova in the Hong Kong final, marking her first WTA title since her win at Monterrey in 2022.

Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, has faced numerous adversities and challenges over the past year and a half. She entered the Hong Kong tournament ranked 60th in the world but is now hoping that this victory marks the beginning of a much brighter chapter in her career.

“We’ve had a very, very tough couple of years. My family, my parents, my coach, and my performance coach stood by my side, constantly motivating me to persevere, and the hard work is finally paying off. Hopefully, we can continue down this path,” Fernandez expressed after claiming her first title since March 2022.

Fernandez’s Road to Victory Over Siniakova The Hong Kong final didn’t start off favorably for Fernandez, as Siniakova secured breaks in the third and ninth games, comfortably taking the first set.

However, Fernandez made a strong comeback at the beginning of the second set, notching back-to-back breaks to establish a 4-0 lead. Even though Siniakova was down by two breaks, she refused to give up, getting one break back and creating six break-point opportunities in the eighth game. Had Siniakova capitalized on any of those six break points, the second set would have been level at 4-4.

Nonetheless, Fernandez managed to hold her serve and secured the second set in the 10th game. After winning the second set, she continued to apply pressure by breaking Siniakova in the opening game of the third set. Although Siniakova managed to break Fernandez in the eighth game, Fernandez retaliated by breaking the Czech once again in the seventh game.

Fernandez experienced another break in the eighth game but made a comeback by breaking Siniakova in the ninth game to establish a 5-4 lead. In the 10th game, Fernandez capitalized on her second match point, securing a hard-fought three-set victory over Siniakova.

Following this remarkable win, Fernandez is now gearing up for her next challenge in Nanchang, where she is set to face Hanyu Guo in the first round.
