In April, Garbine Muguruza Revealed Her Tennis Sabbatical: A Deep Dive into Her Journey

Back in April, Garbine Muguruza made a surprising announcement, expressing her need for a hiatus from tennis. Her last competitive match was in February at the Lyon Open, where she suffered a first-round defeat to Czech teenager Linda Noskova.

The tennis world and curious onlookers were left wondering what was happening in Muguruza’s life after her February exit. While injuries played a part, it seemed that there were deeper mental and emotional factors contributing to her extended break.

Muguruza, a two-time Grand Slam champion (2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon), had also claimed the Chicago Tennis Classic title and the year-ending WTA Finals in 2021, cementing her status as the world’s No. 3 player at that time. However, her on-court performance had been gradually declining. She found it increasingly challenging to advance past the quarterfinals in the tournaments she entered, leading to mounting anxiety about reversing her losing streak.

In an attempt to find a solution, Muguruza decided to step away from tennis, temporarily leaving behind the pressures and frustrations. She explained, “As of today, I have no intention of returning to competition. My plan right now is to sleep, rest, be with my loved ones, and recover lost time,” as she shared with Women’s Health Magazine.

Muguruza had lost her desire for tennis and emphasized, “Tennis doesn’t have a place in my routine… I’m taking a break and trying to stay away from the courts.” The once joyful and carefree Spaniard had become more candid, admitting, “I still follow my colleagues,” and occasionally indulges in a casual game. As the season’s end approaches, the path ahead for Muguruza remains uncertain.

While her rankings slowly decline, her focus has shifted away from her place in the rankings and towards her personal well-being and happiness. The decision regarding her return to competitive tennis is a complex one, and even Muguruza herself is unsure. Will she gradually ease back into practice and contemplate a limited return to the tennis scene, or will she bid farewell to the sport and competition altogether, leaving behind her rackets and tennis mindset? Only time will reveal the next chapter in Garbine Muguruza’s journey.
