Elena Rybakina Aims to Bounce Back with Increased Match Play After Overcoming Health Setback at US Open

Following her struggle with a virus that disrupted her performance at the US Open and required several weeks of recovery, Elena Rybakina is eager to return to competitive action. The setback was evident in her early exit at the Cincinnati round of 16 and her subsequent third-round defeat at the US Open.

Originally slated to participate in the Tokyo tournament this week, Rybakina made a late withdrawal due to her ongoing health issues. However, she is now preparing to compete at the China Open in Beijing. During her pre-tournament press conference, Rybakina candidly shared her recent challenges. She stated, “Well, for sure I’m focusing now on playing more matches because, unfortunately, I fell ill again, and perhaps no one was aware of it. New York was tough for me, and it took me a couple of weeks to recover. That’s why coming to Tokyo may not have been the best decision for me. Right now, I’m just eager to get back on the court. Of course, all my attention is on the WTA Finals.”

Rybakina, at the age of 24, returns to China for the first time since 2019, when she reached the final in Nanchang, only to be defeated by Rebecca Peterson. In that same year, she also reached the quarterfinals in Wuhan, where she was eliminated by Aryna Sabalenka. Since then, Rybakina’s career has taken a remarkable turn, with her becoming a Grand Slam champion and establishing herself as one of the premier players in the sport.

Reflecting on her return to China, Rybakina remarked, “Yeah, it’s been quite a while. I believe I’ve improved in various aspects since then. Of course, I was young and just starting to make my mark. It was an incredible experience for me to compete in Wuhan for the first time. I think I’ve evolved a lot through experience, particularly in making decisions on the court. It’s been a long journey, and I’m thrilled to be back.” In the opening round of the Beijing tournament, Rybakina will face Zheng Qinwen.
