Aryna Sabalenka faced a significantly different challenge in her second-round match at the China Open compared to her first-round encounter on Sunday. The world’s top-ranked player needed just over two and a half hours to clinch a 7-5, 7-6(2) victory against Great Britain’s Katie Boulter.

Throughout both sets, the 56th-ranked Boulter, who had successfully qualified for the main draw, had opportunities to serve for the set in the 10th game. However, on both occasions, she failed to convert any set points. Boulter managed to break Sabalenka’s serve in the seventh game of the first set and the ninth game of the second.

Sabalenka, once she regained momentum, ensured that Boulter couldn’t shift the scoreline in her favor. Sabalenka recorded eight aces and seven double faults, while her opponent delivered five aces and six double faults.

The 2023 Australian Open champion won 67% of her first-serve points, slightly edging out her opponent, who won 63%. Sabalenka also proved effective on the return, claiming 55% of points on Boulter’s second serve and 56% of her own second-serve points. Sabalenka finished the match with 107 points to Boulter’s 95, including 34 winners each.

Aryna Sabalenka’s next challenge will be Jasmine Paolini, who secured a second-round victory on Monday against Yue Yuan.

In Beijing, Ons Jabeur’s China Open Journey Ends

The China Open saw the departure of fourth seed Jessica Pegula’s opponent in the semi-finals. Pegula, who faced Anna Blinkova in the second round, dropped the opening set but rallied to secure a 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1 victory after a two-hour and five-minute battle.

Among the early winners was Caroline Garcia, the ninth seed from France, who was pushed to three sets by Yulia Putintseva. Garcia emerged victorious with a final score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, after two hours and 15 minutes of play.
