In Tokyo, Felix Auger-Aliassime from Montreal and Sebastian Ofner of Austria, both having recently overcome challenging first-round victories in the Japan Open Tennis Championships, competed in a test of endurance on Tuesday evening.

Ultimately, Auger-Aliassime, ranked eighth, emerged victorious, securing a 6-4, 6-1 win in one hour and 34 minutes. His triumph led him to the quarterfinals, where he is set to encounter American Marcos Giron, who caused an upset by defeating No. 2 seed Casper Ruud (6-3, 6-4) earlier that day.

This marks Auger-Aliassime’s first quarterfinal appearance since May.

Ofner, having spent nearly three hours in his previous match against Christopher O’Connell of Australia on Sunday, faced off against Auger-Aliassime, who had also endured a lengthy battle against Aleksandar Vukic of Australia on the same day.

The 23-year-old Canadian displayed sharper and more aggressive gameplay against the 27-year-old Ofner compared to his previous match against Vukic. Evidently, Auger-Aliassime seemed to have more energy left in his tank than his opponent, who appeared to be fatigued early in the second set.

Auger-Aliassime delivered five aces, with two double faults, and secured five games on return. On the other hand, Ofner managed four aces, three double faults, and grappled with more unforced errors.

Following the match, Auger-Aliassime expressed, “I enjoy playing the way I did today. And I really enjoy winning. It’s been a tough year, but I’m young, and making progress. Hopefully, we keep improving here.”
