Scotland’s rugby sensation, Emma Wassell of Ellon, reflects on a transformative journey from the sidelines, gaining a “new perspective” on the sport after enduring months of injury.

The 28-year-old Ellon native is back in action, currently joining the national team in South Africa for the WXV 2 competition. Despite playing 54 consecutive Tests from 2014 to 2022, Wassell faced a brief hiatus due to a wrist injury. Her return was marked by a resilient spirit until a more severe knee issue sidelined her from the TikTok Women’s Six Nations earlier this year. Recently, Wassell celebrated her 62nd cap in a triumphant 31-17 bonus point win against South Africa, kickstarting Scotland’s WXV 2 campaign.

Wassell acknowledges the profound impact of her time away from the game, stating, “Being out for a spell earlier this year gave me a new perspective on rugby and on life in general.” Having never missed a national team training camp for nearly a decade, Wassell found it challenging to transition from player to spectator. However, she embraces the positive aspects of the experience, emphasizing the importance of not taking their privileged position for granted.

Reflecting on the camaraderie within the team, Wassell expresses gratitude for representing her country globally alongside a remarkable group of teammates and friends. She notes, “We are privileged to represent our country all around the world with the best group of teammates and friends, and that is the stuff that dreams are made of.”

Wassell commends the team’s depth and confidence, anticipating a challenging match against the USA. As the Scotland matchday 23 is set to be named, the team is geared up for another exhilarating encounter in the WXV 2 competition.
