Oborududu eyes Olympic slot in Serbia

Blessing Oborududu, a two-time Commonwealth champion and Olympic silver medalist, is set to kick off her quest for a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games as she commences her campaign at the ongoing 2023 Pre Olympic Qualifiers in Belgrade, Serbia today, Wednesday.

Meanwhile, her compatriot Odunayo Adekuoroye, who faced a quarter-finals loss on Tuesday, is determined to secure a bronze medal, which would guarantee her a place among the athletes competing at the Paris Olympics next year.

Adekuoroye’s journey in the tournament began with an impressive 9-7 points victory over Brazil’s Guilla Olivera, who is ranked fourth in the world, in the round of 16. In a thrilling 57kg bout at the World Wrestling Championships, Adekuoroye showcased her prowess by lifting and slamming the Brazilian onto the mat to secure the win.

However, in the subsequent quarter-finals, Adekuoroye, currently ranked 22nd, faced a formidable opponent in former world No.1, India’s Sarita Mor, and was narrowly defeated with a score of 6-4.

The 29-year-old will participate in the repĂȘchage, a contest to secure a place in the final, on Wednesday with her eyes set on winning the bronze medal. This opportunity arose after Sarita Mor secured her place in the final.

In other quarter-final matches on the same day, Nigerian wrestlers Mercy Genesis and Hannah Reuben saw their hopes of Olympic qualification or medal contention diminish as their quarter-final opponents failed to advance to the final rounds.

Genesis was defeated by Romania’s Emilia Grigore with a score of 8-4 in the women’s 50kg category, while African Championships silver medalist Reuben faced a 6-2 points loss to Tatiana Renteria of Colombia in the women’s 76kg division.

In today’s matches, 21-year-old Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Esther Kolawale will compete in the 62kg category, while African champion Christiana Ogunsoya will take part in the 53kg category.
