Johann Zarco Struggles to Explain Jorge Martin’s Remarkable Form

Johann Zarco finds it challenging to articulate the exceptional performance of his Pramac Ducati MotoGP teammate Jorge Martin in recent races, describing the Spanish rider as being ‘in a bubble.’

Martin has closed the gap to long-time championship leader Francesco Bagnaia to just three points following his victories in both the sprint and the main race at the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi, securing five wins in the last six races.

Zarco, despite his impressive one-lap speed in qualifying in Japan, was unable to achieve a higher position than fifth in the sprint race after starting from the 10th position on the grid.

Speaking after the race, the French rider struggled to pinpoint precisely what Martin is doing differently. However, he acknowledged the importance of Martin capitalizing on the Ducati’s strong suit of braking, especially on the stop-and-go Motegi circuit.

He is in a zone right now, Zarco commented about Martin. Everything he is doing is working well. When a rider reaches this level, it’s difficult to explain what he’s doing better.

He is simply doing what he loves in his own way, and it’s all coming together. You could say he excels in braking and takes full advantage of the Ducati’s strength in this area.

Braking is one of Ducati’s strong points, so when you can utilize it effectively, you can outperform everyone, just like Pecco [Bagnaia] did before and like Bezzecchi did when everything was going right.

Martin is doing it, and his style, along with his cornering speed, is clicking perfectly. Even when he made a tire choice mistake in India, he still finished second.

Zarco Unfazed by Pressure to Win Before Switching to Honda

Johann Zarco is resolute in his stance that he isn’t burdened by the pressure to secure a race victory before making his transition from Ducati to Honda next season.

The French rider believes that he will continue to have opportunities to contend for race wins even after swapping his Desmosedici GP23 for an RC213V in 2024. He has already committed to joining the satellite LCR team, taking over the seat previously held by Alex Rins, who is set to join Yamaha.

Zarco expressed his confidence, stating, There’s no pressure, and I believe I can arrive at Honda at a good time. I was happy to see the performance of Marquez and Mir [in India], it means they still have a good capacity to adapt and set up the bike. Maybe it will be a good surprise that I can adapt well and have a chance of victory even in the future.

When asked whether he identified any particular circuits as prime opportunities to achieve his elusive first MotoGP win, Zarco responded, “I don’t think about which track will give me more chances than another one. Everything is so close that anything can happen. Also, the weather conditions can change, and this can create opportunities sometimes. Perhaps the least favorable chance is at Valencia, so I want to capitalize on my opportunities [before then]
