Kyle Larson’s NASCAR playoff campaign has been a rollercoaster ride, showcasing the unforgiving nature of the sport. Despite his stellar performance throughout the season and a strong start in the postseason, his path to the Round of 8 is now in jeopardy. Recent races at Texas and Talladega have put the brakes on Larson’s #5 Camaro, raising doubts about his playoff prospects.

Heading into the Roval, Larson finds himself in a precarious position. In a recent episode of his DirtyMo Media podcast, Steve Letarte, a legend at Hendrick Motorsports, weighed in on Larson’s chances and the challenges he faces.

Before the playoffs commenced, it was clear that drivers had to excel at every stage. Larson seemed poised for success initially, conquering Darlington and securing top-5 finishes in Kansas and Bristol. However, setbacks at Texas, where he led the race but slipped due to a late tire issue, and Talladega, where a last-minute crash affected his finish, have dropped him to 7th place in the standings, with Brad Keselowski holding the final spot.

As Larson faces the Roval under these dire circumstances, Letarte’s comments may not instill much confidence in the driver. During the podcast discussion, Letarte suggested that Larson might not be a surprise winner, noting his strong qualifications and race performance. The “Professor” on the podcast challenged this view, pointing out Larson’s four road course victories, including one at the Roval.

While some may argue that Larson’s recent misfortunes were beyond his control, a failure at the Roval would leave no room for excuses. Despite Letarte’s reservations, Larson’s track record offers a glimmer of hope for Rick Hendrick’s #5 team.

In 2021, Larson won at the Charlotte Roval and went on to claim his first Cup Series championship. He also ranks third among all Hendrick Motorsports drivers—past and present—in road course wins. Larson has led 60 laps in his four Roval starts, hinting at his potential to excel on this track. Nevertheless, Larson remains aware of his past mistakes as he approaches Charlotte.

In an interview with WCNC’s Ashley Stroehlein, Larson expressed his affinity for the Roval and acknowledged the race’s unpredictability. He recalled past incidents but also highlighted his previous victory there, indicating the potential for a strong performance.

Larson hopes to avoid crashes and secure a spot in the next round, emphasizing the importance of stage points. With strategic planning underway for the #5 crew and other teams, this weekend’s race will determine whether Larson can join the elite drivers of 2023.
