McLaren team principal Andrea Stella expressed his strong belief that Oscar Piastri’s victory in the F1 Sprint in Qatar was truly well-deserved.

Piastri’s impressive performance began from the pole position on Saturday evening in Lusail, where he engaged in a spirited battle with George Russell to clinch his inaugural F1 triumph.

Stella, who has consistently praised the young Australian driver, showered him with praise, emphasizing the dominant nature of his win.

“In my view, this victory was commanding,” he stated. “He secured P1 in the shootout on Saturday afternoon and displayed remarkable strength during the race, maintaining a pace comparable to Max Verstappen’s in the final laps. The race was filled with overtaking and re-overtaking maneuvers, making this victory very well-deserved. It adds another significant chapter to his career following his initial podium.”

Piastri has made an immediate impact since joining the F1 circuit this season. His composed and methodical approach, often flying under the radar in the early sessions, has consistently led to increasingly impressive performances when it counts. This approach has resulted in few incidents and garnered considerable support within the team. It has also allowed him to capitalize on the potential of the MCL60 as the car’s performance has improved.

While Aston Martin initially emerged as the surprise of the season, McLaren has steadily gained momentum. Mercedes’ technical head, James Allison, lauded the Woking-based team for turning what was arguably one of the weakest cars on the grid into the second-fastest.

Although circumstances thwarted Piastri’s chances of securing a maiden podium in Silverstone, he did manage to secure second place in the F1 Sprint in Belgium a few weeks later.

Piastri’s success in Qatar, coupled with subsequent achievements and McLaren’s remarkable performance in the Japanese Grand Prix, has propelled team morale to new heights. However, Stella emphasized that the final objective has not yet been reached.

“While this F1 Sprint victory is undeniably a positive moment for the team, it marks another significant milestone in our journey,” Stella affirmed. “It’s a moment of happiness for all those who have worked tirelessly and contributed to turning the situation around. I am filled with gratitude for them. We often say that in order to thrive in Formula 1, you must embrace discomfort and find a way to enjoy it. When you achieve good results, it’s important to savor them and maintain the pace that Formula 1 demands.
