Advancement in Mick Schumacher’s Journey towards an Alpine Racing Position

Mick Schumacher faces a pivotal moment in his career as he gears up for a test drive in an Alpine WEC prototype, scheduled for Tuesday. This marks a significant shift for Schumacher, who, following his departure from Haas in 2022, found himself without a clear path back to the Formula 1 grid. Earlier this year, he acknowledged the need for a “Plan B.”

While Schumacher’s preference was a return to Formula 1, his prospects grew slimmer as teams finalized their line-ups. This prompted discussions of an alternative plan, with rumors circulating that the son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher was in talks with Alpine regarding a role in the World Endurance Championship.

Alpine’s interim team boss, Bruno Famin, confirmed these discussions, stating, “It’s true that we’re talking with Mick about the possibility to race in our endurance programme with the A424. It would be a good opportunity for both parties I think.” According to, progress has been made in these discussions, with Alpine confirming Schumacher’s upcoming test of their WEC prototype, the A424, at the Jerez circuit.

However, it’s worth noting that while this test suggests Schumacher may be heading to Le Mans and the WEC next year, nothing is finalized. The driver line-up for Alpine’s two cars in their Hypercar class comeback season remains uncertain.

If Schumacher does secure a deal with Alpine, he could potentially continue as Mercedes’ reserve driver next season, seamlessly balancing both roles. Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ motorsport boss, affirmed, “Whatever programme he does decide, he can stay, if it is possible from the other side, with us as a reserve driver.”

Schumacher, cautious about premature confirmations, emphasized that nothing is set in stone, as he shared with ORF after his accidental “official” confirmation as an Alpine WEC driver.
