Sean “Suga” O’Malley had expressed his desire to compete before the end of 2023, eyeing UFC 296 on December 16th. However, it appears that won’t happen as the UFC has already filled the December pay-per-view with title fights featuring champions Leon Edwards and Alexandre Pantoja.

O’Malley discussed the situation on The Joe Rogan Experience, revealing that he genuinely wanted to fight in December but was informed by the UFC that he’s too big of a name to be a co-main event alongside champions from a higher weight class.

“They want me to main event my own show, which I think is f—ing dope,” O’Malley said.

UFC CEO Dana White has touted Sean O’Malley vs. Aljamain Sterling as the biggest bantamweight title fight in the company’s history, given O’Malley’s drawing power. As a result, O’Malley may not participate in a historic event planned for early 2024, likely UFC 300 in April.

While O’Malley is uncertain about his first title defense opponent, he’s hopeful it will be Marlon “Chito” Vera, but competition from Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili is also in the mix.
