In a significant shift, Paramount Global has announced the discontinuation of Showtime Sports by the end of 2023, marking the end of a 38-year era for live boxing events and Bellator MMA broadcasts. This change is part of Paramount’s effort to streamline its resources and adapt its content strategy. Paramount Global, formed from the merger of CBS and Viacom in 2019, has been directing its focus toward Paramount+, its streaming service. The move comes after Showtime’s streaming platform was fully integrated into Paramount+ earlier in 2023.

CBS Sports is expected to take on some of the events and documentaries that were previously associated with Showtime Sports, aligning with the broader media industry trend of channel restructuring. This development echoes Comcast’s decision to shut down the NBC Sports Network in 2021, consolidating live events on other channels within the NBCUniversal network. Showtime Sports will conclude its operations, following in the footsteps of HBO Sports, which ended its historic boxing broadcasts a few years earlier. Additionally, Showtime recently announced the discontinuation of “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
