Israel Adesanya, who recently experienced a surprising loss to Sean Strickland, has decided to step away from the UFC for an extended period. Adesanya’s journey in the middleweight division has been nothing short of remarkable. He ascended to the throne in 2019 and successfully defended his title several times. He even pursued ‘champ-champ’ status, engaging in a memorable two-fight series against Alex Pereira in which he lost and reclaimed his belt.

However, the shocker came during his recent headlining bout at UFC 293 in Sydney, where he was outpointed by Strickland. This defeat signaled that perhaps Adesanya’s frequent and admirable activity had taken a toll on him. As a result, he announced his intention to take a “long” break from the sport.

Chael Sonnen, the former middleweight and light heavyweight UFC contender, offered his perspective on Adesanya’s decision in a video on his YouTube channel. Sonnen considered the break to be a wise choice, given the circumstances. However, he also highlighted the rarity of successful comebacks from self-imposed breaks in sports.

Sonnen suggested that Adesanya should contemplate retirement, implying that taking a break could indicate a decline in motivation rather than a need for physical rest. He noted that when athletes start taking breaks, it’s often a sign that their mental drive has diminished.

“I’m not predicting that he will retire,” Sonnen stated. “I’m suggesting that he consider it. If he discovers other passions and interests during this break, I would support that.”

Adesanya has not provided a specific timeframe for his hiatus, leaving many to speculate about his future. While he has expressed his intent to return with a bang, Sonnen believes that his decision to step away for an extended period indicates a waning of motivation. The middleweight division will continue without “The Last Stylebender” for the time being, and Adesanya’s ultimate decision remains uncertain.
