On October 17th, Kamaru Usman openly acknowledged that he couldn’t pass up the “chance to achieve something extraordinary.” He accepted the opportunity to step up to the middleweight division and replace the injured Paulo Costa to face Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi this upcoming weekend.

The former welterweight champion is taking a considerable risk by agreeing to this short-notice bout against the formidable Chimaev. However, he firmly believes that conquering one of the UFC’s most promising talents with only 11 days’ notice would mark one of the crowning achievements in his illustrious career.

Until now, Usman had resisted moving up to the 185-pound division while Israel Adesanya held the championship. However, with Adesanya no longer in the middleweight picture, Usman envisions an opportunity to temporarily hold the vacant middleweight title before a potential epic clash with Adesanya in the future.

Having experienced back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, Usman has recently parted ways with the welterweight belt. This change has allowed him to rekindle his passion for the sport and refocus on showcasing his top-tier skills.

Usman has issued a warning to Chimaev, suggesting that a swift victory may be in store if his opponent hasn’t thoroughly prepared. Nonetheless, he emphasizes that he doesn’t underestimate the challenge posed by the undefeated Swede, describing him as “as advertised” and deserving of “the utmost respect.”
