Paulo Costa Undergoes Surgery Before UFC 294 | Backup Fighter Named for Lightweight Title Clash

Is Paulo Costa out of UFC 294?, When was UFC 294?

Facing Khamzat Chimaev in peak condition is a formidable challenge, but Paulo Costa is gearing up to take on the rising star at UFC 294 with one arm in recovery mode. The former middleweight title contender recently disclosed that he underwent elbow surgery last month in preparation for his impending clash with Chimaev scheduled for October 21st.

Costa shared his surgical journey on social media, posting on Instagram, “How strong are you? You never really know until you get tested by the fire of life. I had surgery three weeks ago, the size was 10 stitches all over. But, I know how tough I am and continue improving and overcoming myself. That didn’t stop me, nothing can stop me. Keep on training and even sparring.”

The surgery, which targeted his right elbow, was a necessary measure to address an infected bursa, as revealed by the UFC middleweight, currently ranked No. 6 in the promotion’s official 185-pound rankings. Despite the setback, Costa remains resolute, emphasizing, “I will not pull out of this fight. I can beat him 99 out of 100 times. Only if the doctor doesn’t allow me. I want that fight.”

Costa, boasting a record of 14-2, is coming off a thrilling Fight of the Night triumph against former champion Luke Rockhold last year. The winner of the impending clash between him and the No. 4 ranked welterweight, Chimaev (12-0), positions themselves as a strong contender to challenge the current UFC middleweight champion, Sean Strickland.

UFC 294 is set to unfold at the Etihad Arena and features a headline bout between UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira in a highly anticipated rematch.

In further developments on the UFC scene, it was confirmed by UFC president Dana White that lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot will serve as the backup fighter for the Makhachev vs. Oliveira 2 showdown. Gamrot is required to meet championship weight standards and will step in if either of the main fighters misses weight or withdraws from the fight. Gamrot enters this role on the back of consecutive victories, defeating Rafael Fiziev due to injury and securing a split decision win over Jalin Turner.
