A suspect has been incarcerated without the option of posting bail in connection with the theft of a golf cart from Freedom Pointe in The Villages.

Megan Nicole Blackmon, aged 34 and hailing from Fruitland Park, was apprehended this week and booked into the Sumter County Detention Center on a felony charge of grand theft.

The alleged theft revolves around the disappearance of a blue 2008 EZ-GO golf cart back in 2021 from the parking garage at Freedom Pointe, located on El Camino Real.

A significant breakthrough in the case came when an individual who had reportedly participated with Blackmon in the golf cart theft provided crucial information that ultimately led to her arrest. In a candid 2022 interview conducted while he was detained on an unrelated matter at Lake County Jail, 42-year-old David Robert Andrus admitted to his role as a lookout during the golf cart theft, as documented in an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. According to Andrus, Blackmon masterminded the subsequent sale of the stolen golf cart, which took place in Citrus County. In exchange for the purloined vehicle, Blackmon allegedly received “a substantial quantity of methamphetamine and $250 in cash.” The stolen golf cart was estimated to be worth $8,000 at the time of the theft.

Andrus also confessed that he and Blackmon had been actively searching for a golf cart to steal for several days, and he, too, has been charged in connection with the theft.

Incriminating evidence in the form of video surveillance footage from the Freedom Pointe parking garage played a pivotal role in tying both suspects to the crime. Notably, the owner of the golf cart had left the key in the vehicle at the time of the theft.

Before her recent transfer, Blackmon was already in custody at the Marion County Jail on an unrelated theft charge. Following a court-issued order, she was moved earlier this week to the jail in Bushnell to face charges related to the golf cart theft.
