As the 2023 Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan, approaches, South Korean golfer Sungjae Im is primed and ready. With two PGA Tour victories already under his belt, Im is determined to convert his recent strong performances into a third win.

Im’s readiness was evident as he shared his intentions to come out swinging at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club. He recently achieved a remarkable tied-for-second finish at the Genesis Championship on the Korean PGA Tour, making his return to the PGA Tour after a month’s hiatus even more anticipated. Im emphasized his extensive practice on Japanese soil, exuding confidence in his game, while acknowledging the formidable challenge that the PGA Tour presents.

Speaking about his aspirations for the weekend, Im expressed, “I’ve been playing in Japan for several years and finished tied third in my first Zozo Championship in 2019, so I know the course well. I’ve been practicing well, and conditions this week are good. If I can improve my driver accuracy, I think I can do well. It’s not easy to win on the PGA Tour, and I’ve had a few chances to contend for the title this season, but it’s unfortunate that I didn’t capitalize on the opportunities. However, I think if I stay close to the top, I will have a chance to win again sometime soon. If I don’t get impatient, if I don’t get greedy, and if I keep working the way I’ve been practicing, I think I can win.”

Sungjae Im has had a commendable season, accumulating nine top-10 finishes, including a strong performance in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Notably, he entered the playoffs with a T14 finish at the Wyndham Championship and secured a T6 finish at the St. Jude Championship. He continued to impress with a solo 7th place in the BMW Championship and finished the season in August with a solo 24th place in the Tour Championship.

As the 2023 Zozo Championship unfolds, Sungjae Im will be striving for the top prize in the $8.5 million event. He faces formidable competition from golfing stars like defending champion Keegan Bradley, World No. 6 Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, and local hero Hideki Matsuyama, with K.H. Lee and S.H. Kim also in the field.

SportsLine places Im at respectable 18-1 odds to win the championship. He joins the list of favorites for the event, alongside Schauffele, Morikawa, and Fowler. Im will aim to follow in the footsteps of fellow PGA Tour star Tom Kim, who clinched victory at the Shriners Children’s Open last weekend, providing a major source of inspiration for the young Asian golfer.

The golfing world eagerly awaits the unfolding drama as Sungjae Im vies for success at the 2023 Zozo Championship.
