The ongoing controversy surrounding Patrick Cantlay’s Ryder Cup stance continues to create division within the American team. Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir tweeted today, citing “multiple sources,” that Cantlay is advocating for player compensation in the Ryder Cup and has refused to wear a team cap at Marco Simone as a protest.

Weir also mentioned that Cantlay and Xander Schauffele have distanced themselves from their American teammates, opting to sit separately in the team room. In response, US captain Zach Johnson vehemently denied these claims, emphasizing the exceptional unity of the team.

Despite the denials, a PGA Tour professional has taken to social media to indirectly criticize Cantlay. Brent Grant, a 27-year-old golfer from Florida currently ranked 442nd on the Official World Golf Ranking, shared a post on Instagram that read: “If anyone was wondering. Yes ego and a greedy mindset doesn’t get it done in the Ryder Cup. Guess which of the players the Tour hostage for the last two years.” Although Grant didn’t explicitly name Cantlay, his message left no doubt about its target.

As word of these developments spread at Marco Simone, European fans taunted Cantlay, even as he prepared to compete in his afternoon fourballs match with Wyndham Clark against Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick.
