The first leg of the Greenwood Cup has concluded in Dannevirke, with the remaining two rounds set for November in Hastings. This tournament brings together the finest golfers in Hawke’s Bay, with the top 10 from each club competing in match-play.

At the end of each match, wins and draws are tallied. After five rounds, the overall winner is determined. City clubs have an advantage due to their larger pool of golfers, but there’s a Country Cup up for grabs for smaller clubs like Karamu, Ongaonga, Central, and Dannevirke.

The Greenwood Cup, in its current format since 1953, hasn’t been claimed by Dannevirke since then. RB Dailey, a current Life Member at 92, was part of the victorious 1953 team and witnessed this year’s competition.

Craig Nash, the captain of this year’s Dannevirke team, has represented the club in the Greenwood Cup on and off since 1979, winning it four times. He emphasizes that representing the club is the pinnacle in golf.

The team received T-shirts sponsored by Dannevirke Dairy Supplies prior to the tournament. The team and their rankings are as follows: 1. Rhys Harold, 2. Brad Truesdale, 3. Patrick Harold, 4. Craig Nash, 5. William Harold, 6. Chris Mason, 7. Greg Vigers, 8. Syd Hikawai, 9. Clay Lochead, 10. Brad Dippie, with manager Bryan Burt.

With the highest handicap at just +4 and the home course advantage, expectations were high. On Saturday, they faced Maraenui and won seven and a half games to two and a half, with standout performances like Patrick Harold’s comeback from three down.

The afternoon match against Hastings ended in defeat, although several games were closely contested. The next morning’s games were delayed to accommodate the All Blacks vs. Ireland match, with breakfast served at the club while the game was shown on a big screen.

Dannevirke was pitted against the third city club in a row, and Napier emerged victorious. Nonetheless, some games remained tight. Club captain Mike Matthews expressed pride in the team’s performance, despite the disappointment, and looks forward to the chance to secure the Country Cup in November. He also commended the greenkeepers for maintaining the course in impeccable condition, lauded by an out-of-town competitor as perfect for match play with an opportunity to score around every corner.
