In a stunning debut, teenage sensation Marc Guiu clinched a 1-0 victory for reigning champions Barcelona against Athletic Bilbao, just seconds after stepping onto the pitch in La Liga action on Sunday.

The victory propelled Barcelona to third place in the standings, setting the stage for a highly anticipated clash against league leaders Real Madrid in the upcoming Clasico. The Catalans are now just one point behind their arch-rivals and second-placed Girona, who earlier secured a commanding 5-2 win against Almeria.

For much of the match, Barcelona struggled to break through the Athletic Bilbao defense. However, the 17-year-old forward, Guiu, made an immediate impact after being subbed in by manager Xavi. Guiu was elegantly set up by Joao Felix and managed to slot the ball past Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon. Although Simon got a hand on the shot, he couldn’t prevent the goal.

Guiu’s debut exemplifies Barcelona’s continued success in producing promising talent through its La Masia academy.

“He’s been training with us throughout the season, and it’s crucial that every newcomer contributes,” noted Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez in an interview with DAZN. “We’re delighted for him, for his goal, and most importantly, for the win.”

Facing a shortage of key players due to injuries, Xavi started Martinez and 20-year-old Fermin Lopez, both academy products. Barcelona, with several regular starters sidelined, had to make do with what they had.

While Felix narrowly missed the target with a shot that hit the crossbar, Athletic, led by former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde, maintained a compact and solid defense, occasionally launching counterattacks with the Williams brothers posing a threat from the flanks.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen made crucial saves, denying Inaki Williams and a subsequent attempt by the Ghanaian striker, with Martinez executing a brilliant block to stop Nico Williams’ rebound.

Approaching the hour mark, Barcelona created a prime opportunity when Simon made an exceptional save to deny Lopez from close range, following an initial stop from Felix’s low strike. Another chance followed as Felix provided substitute Lamine Yamal with a scoring opportunity, but the 16-year-old talent missed the target just wide of the near post.

Guiu’s entrance into the match transformed Barcelona’s performance, and with his very first touch, he entered the penalty area and confidently fired past Simon.

With a burst of energy, Guiu quickly earned a booking for an attempted slide tackle that caught the goalkeeper, as he aimed to prevent Simon from clearing the ball. The jubilant home fans roared their approval.

Barcelona’s triumph propelled them past Atletico Madrid into fourth place, while Athletic Bilbao, managed by Valverde, occupies the sixth spot in the standings.

I’m frustrated because the ball narrowly eluded me, and perhaps I could have done more,” Simon expressed to DAZN. “We truly wanted to secure three points to maintain a considerable lead over seventh place.
