Pep Guardiola emphasized that Erling Haaland shouldn’t feel the weight of expectations to score more goals, following the Norwegian’s crucial brace against Young Boys on Wednesday.

Haaland’s double in the second half secured a hard-fought 3-1 triumph for the defending champions in their Champions League Group G clash on the synthetic pitch at Bern’s Wankdorf Stadium.

The balance of the game had initially shifted when Meschack Elia equalized Switzerland international Manuel Akanji’s opener with an impressive strike.

Reflecting on Haaland’s recent goal-scoring performance, Guardiola commented, “Last season’s impression lingers that he must score seven goals every game. That’s unrealistic. Despite this, he consistently finds the net.”

He added, “The second goal was exceptional, and he had other opportunities. Creating these chances is crucial. While he aspires to score, my evaluation of him extends beyond goals. He is determined to improve, and I have complete faith in that.”

City’s win, sealed with a Haaland penalty and a well-timed finish, marked their third victory in three group matches, propelling them closer to the knockout stages.

With the potential to secure their 11th consecutive last-16 spot, City can advance by securing another victory against the same opponent at the Etihad Stadium in two weeks.

The outcome was satisfying, and overall, it was an impressive display,” stated Guardiola, noting his team’s 26 goal attempts. “While we could have capitalized further, the crucial factor remains the creation of these opportunities.”

Guardiola further explained that Phil Foden’s absence was due to a minor issue, and Julian Alvarez, who had a goal disallowed after entering the match, couldn’t complete the full game.

Young Boys coach Raphael Wicky expressed satisfaction with his team’s efforts. “The team showcased commendable courage and passion, but against an opponent of this caliber, a flawless performance is required. Unfortunately, we couldn’t achieve that,” he remarked.

“Perfection entails converting your chances and preventing goals from set-pieces. Although we’re disheartened by the result, we can take pride in the team’s overall performance.
