In their 27-24 road loss to Rutgers, Michigan State football sought a new offensive leader, and redshirt freshman Katin Houser stepped into the spotlight. Despite the defeat, Houser’s debut as a starter showed promise.

Interim head coach Harlon Barnett expressed satisfaction with Houser’s performance, praising his command of the offense and ability to make plays. Unlike previous games where turnovers plagued the Spartans, Houser remained interception-free, in stark contrast to redshirt junior Noah Kim’s struggles.

Houser wasted no time, throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Montorie Foster Jr. on the opening drive, marking the first time this season that the Spartans scored on their first possession. Later, Houser showcased his running ability with a 12-yard rushing touchdown just before halftime.

During the third quarter, Houser added another touchdown to his stats, connecting with redshirt senior wide receiver Tre Mosley for a four-yard score, providing MSU with an 18-point lead.

Although not flawless, Houser’s performance solidified his position as the team’s starting quarterback. His room for growth was acknowledged, and his teammates were optimistic about his future development.

Houser finished the game with 133 passing yards, three touchdowns, and most notably, zero turnovers.

While Houser shone, the Spartans’ turnovers, including five by his receivers and special teams, cost them their second-half momentum. This allowed Rutgers to stage a 21-0 run and secure their victory, handing Michigan State its fourth consecutive loss of the 2023 season.

Looking ahead to the rivalry matchup against No. 2 Michigan, Houser will need to elevate his game further to give MSU a chance at victory against the undefeated Wolverines in the upcoming game in East Lansing.
