Julian Nagelsmann began his tenure as Germany’s coach on a winning note, as his team secured a convincing 3-1 victory against the United States in a friendly match. The performance showcased a marked improvement from Germany’s

previous 4-1 defeat to Japan, which led to the dismissal of Hansi Flick as coach after a five-match winless streak. The Euro 2024 hosts aimed to avoid another unexpected loss and delivered a solid and well-rounded performance after an initial setback from Christian Pulisic, who scored for the USA in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Germany, despite missing midfielder Joshua Kimmich due to illness, displayed early promise, with Pascal Gross hitting the post. The home side, featuring lively performances from Pulisic and Tim Weah on the flanks, posed a threat.

Gio Reyna, who had been in a public dispute with coach Gregg Berhalter following the World Cup last year, returned to the starting lineup and contributed creatively as the American team began strongly.

Pulisic provided an impressive solo effort, putting the USA ahead in the 27th minute by cutting in from the left flank and unleashing a fine strike into the far corner.

However, this served as a wake-up call for Germany, with Ilkay Gundogan leveling the score in the 39th minute after a skillful play involving Leroy Sane. Sane dribbled through the American defense, executed a one-two with Gundogan, and attempted to round American goalkeeper Matt Turner, who could only push the ball into Gundogan’s path for a straightforward conversion.

Germany surged ahead in the 58th minute, with center forward Niclas Fuellkrug calmly slotting the ball into the net after a precisely delivered one-touch pass from Robin Gosens. Capitalizing on disarray in the USA defense, Fuellkrug then set up Jamal Musiala for a simple tap-in, extending Germany’s lead to 3-1 for the Euro 2024 hosts.

Sane had a chance to make it four when set up by Musiala but fired wide from a promising position.

Germany’s standout performers included Jamal Musiala, who showcased speed and skill, and the composed and intelligent Ilkay Gundogan in the center of midfield.

Julian Nagelsmann, at 36 years of age, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting that they had been too rushed in the opening 45 minutes. He highlighted the shift toward a more patient and controlled pace of play in the second half as the difference-maker.

Gregg Berhalter’s American team felt the absence of injured central midfielder Tyler Adams, and Pulisic acknowledged their defensive weaknesses. He credited Germany’s strong performance and acknowledged their impressive players.

Germany is scheduled to face Mexico in Philadelphia on Tuesday, while the USA will take on Ghana in Nashville.
