West Ham United’s forward, Jarrod Bowen, has harnessed the disappointment of being excluded from England manager Gareth Southgate’s 2022 World Cup squad as a powerful motivator, propelling him to achieve the “best football” of his career and securing his return to the Three Lions.

Despite being part of England’s squad for the upcoming friendly against Australia and a European Championship qualifier against Italy at Wembley, Bowen’s omission from the 2022 World Cup squad left him disheartened. Reflecting on his exclusion, he stated, “I was disappointed to miss out, but that’s what happened. I had to deal with it, and all I could do is keep playing football to a level that I know I can play at, and everything will take care of itself.”

Bowen pointed out that a productive pre-season and notable performances, including goal-scoring, played a significant role in boosting his confidence and momentum. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset while playing the sport, saying, “Keep playing football with a smile on my face because you know that what makes me a good player … when I’m playing with a smile on my face.”

Recently, Bowen received a call-up from Southgate and secured a new seven-year deal with West Ham. He is the top scorer for West Ham in the Premier League this season, with five goals, and has scored 45 goals in 167 games for the club, including the game-winner in the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina.

Bowen’s dream is to play at Wembley, a milestone he could achieve in the upcoming fixtures. The forward noted that becoming a father of twin girls has brought maturity to his life and allowed him to compartmentalize football from his home life.

England currently tops Group C with 13 points from five games, while Italy, Ukraine, and North Macedonia have seven points each. The team faced a setback when Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta announced that Bukayo Saka would not be available for October’s international fixtures due to a lingering hamstring injury.
