Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, forming an explosive attacking partnership, are set to lead Inter Milan into an exciting Champions League Group D encounter against Salzburg this Tuesday. With a combined total of 16 goals already under their belts this season, these two dynamic forwards have not only made fans quickly forget their former idol and Martinez’s previous strike partner, Romelu Lukaku, but they’ve also positioned last season’s runners-up as strong contenders for the Serie A title, following an uncertain summer that saw key players depart from both their attacking and defensive lines.

Both players found the back of the net in Saturday’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Torino, temporarily propelling Inter to the summit of the Serie A table and elevating Martinez’s overall goal tally to an impressive 12 goals in just 11 matches.

Since the departures of Edin Dzeko and Lukaku over the summer, Martinez has embraced his role as Inter’s primary attacking force, helping the club become the highest-scoring team in Serie A with 24 goals.

Argentinian striker Martinez has already established a five-goal lead over Victor Osimhen, his closest competitor at the summit of Italy’s goal-scoring charts. At his current scoring rate of 11 goals in nine league matches, he could very well surpass Gonzalo Higuain’s single-season record of 36, set in 2016.

“Martinez is a phenomenal player, one of the world’s best strikers. Playing alongside him makes everything seem easier,” remarked Thuram following last month’s resounding 5-1 victory over AC Milan, during which the French forward himself scored a stunning goal.

Martinez’s dominant form has facilitated Thuram’s seamless return to Italy from Borussia Monchengladbach. Despite being the son of French World Cup-winning legend Lilian Thuram, Marcus was born in Parma and has a strong connection to Italy, being fluent in the language despite leaving the country as a child to pursue his youth career in France.

Thuram’s father enjoyed a successful spell at Parma, winning the UEFA Cup and Italian Cup in 1999 alongside Italian football icons like Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluigi Buffon.

Cannavaro recently drew comparisons between Thuram and a young Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his early days at Juventus. Marcus chose Inter over AC Milan and has already made a significant impact, contributing with four goals and five crucial assists, including three for Martinez, making him an integral part of Serie A’s most prolific attacking unit.

“When he first arrived here, I thought he might need some time to adapt, but it was evident from the very first training session that he would quickly acclimate,” commented Inzaghi last Saturday.

The duo has also played a pivotal role in Inter’s current position, tied on four points with Group D leaders Real Sociedad, by scoring the only goals for Inter in their first two matches.

Martinez ensured Inter salvaged a draw in their opening fixture against Sociedad, where they were largely outplayed, while Thuram secured a 1-0 victory over Benfica earlier this month with a clever first-time finish from Denzel Dumfries’ low cross, reminiscent of his opening goal in Saturday’s match.

With Salzburg trailing Inter by just one point and Sociedad facing bottom-placed Benfica, Tuesday’s clash represents an excellent opportunity to create a comfortable cushion in the group, increasing their chances of advancing to the knockout stages.
