Internazionale Claims Top Spot in Champions League Group D with Win over FC Salzburg

Internazionale secured their place at the top of Group D in the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Austrian champions FC Salzburg. The victory followed Inter’s opening 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad and a 1-0 home win against Benfica, earning them seven points from three games. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi commented on the crucial victory for their qualification, stating that they faced a formidable opponent. The group remains balanced, and Inter will face two consecutive away matches, emphasizing the competitive nature of the Champions League.

In the match, Salzburg’s young squad demonstrated their mettle at the San Siro, pressing hard from the beginning. Oscar Gloukh sent their first shot on target in the fourth minute, testing Inter’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer. However, Inter broke the deadlock against the run of play in the 19th minute when Alexis Sánchez scored his first goal since returning to Serie A. Sánchez is now the highest-scoring Chilean in the Champions League, surpassing Arturo Vidal.

While Salzburg leveled the score in the second half with a goal by midfielder Gloukh, Hakan Calhanoglu restored the lead for Inter seven minutes later with a penalty. Although Lautaro Martínez thought he had increased the advantage, his goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review. Despite Salzburg’s efforts in the closing minutes, they failed to threaten Inter, who currently boast the best defensive record in Serie A, having conceded only five goals.

He highlighted their ability to challenge top teams with their footballing style.
