KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Dániel Sallói’s winning penalty kick propelled Sporting Kansas City into the next round of the MLS playoffs following a goalless draw with the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday night.

Sporting KC (13-14-8) claimed a 4-2 victory on penalty kicks, setting them up for a best-of-three series against rival St. Louis starting on Sunday.

San Jose (10-11-14) failed to advance for the sixth time in seven playoff appearances since their MLS Cup triumph in 2003, including eliminations by Kansas City in 2004 and 2020.

Sporting KC captain Johnny Russell opened the penalty shootout with a successful conversion, while goalkeeper Tim Melia thwarted San Jose midfielder Cristian Espinoza’s attempt. Erik Thommy and Gadi Kinda also found the back of the net for Sporting.

Melia has remained unbeaten in all seven penalty shootouts of his professional career, boasting a flawless 5-0 record with Sporting KC.

Kansas City has sustained only one defeat in their last 21 home matches against San Jose, dating back to August 2004. This includes progression in four single-leg knockout ties during that span.

San Jose secured a playoff spot with six draws in their final eight games, while Sporting secured their postseason berth despite garnering fewer than five points from their initial 10 matches of the season.
