Fantasy Football: Raheem’s Return Sparks Must-Start Buzz

At times, Week 2 of the NFL season provides clarity, but occasionally, it adds to the confusion.

Fantasy managers experienced a mixed outcome this time, as backfields in Miami and Los Angeles became clearer, while injuries and struggles muddied the waters in New York and Minnesota. Additionally, the passing games in Washington and Green Bay appear more promising than anticipated by experts. Let’s delve into the details.

NFL WEEK 2 RECAP: Winners and Losers – Patriots Grapple with Ground Game Woes

Here are the players whose fantasy stock rose or fell the most based on their Week 2 performances:

  • RB Raheem Mostert, Miami Dolphins: Mostert, once a journeyman, emerged as a workhorse during Sunday night’s game, amassing 121 rushing yards and scoring two touchdowns on 18 carries. With backup Salvon Ahmed also exiting early, Mostert’s role in the backfield is now solidified. He’s set for a favorable matchup against Denver in the next game.
  • RB Matt Breida, New York Giants: Breida could step into the starting role on a short week as Saquon Barkley’s availability is uncertain due to an ankle injury. The experienced running back has maintained an impressive career average of 4.8 yards per carry and faces his original NFL team, the 49ers, on Thursday.
  • WR Marvin Mims Jr., Denver Broncos: Mims displayed exceptional downfield prowess by securing receptions of 53 and 60 yards against Washington. Given the possibility of the Broncos trailing against Miami this week, there may be an increased emphasis on passing, especially against a Dolphins defense that has shown vulnerability to big plays.
  • WR Jayden Reed, Green Bay Packers: The rookie made a notable impact with two touchdowns in a close contest against Atlanta. With WR Christian Watson still sidelined, Reed has become QB Jordan Love’s primary receiving option. While he may need some refinement, he has garnered 13 targets in the first two games and is likely to remain in the mix even when Watson returns to full health.
  • QB Sam Howell, Washington Commanders: In Denver, the second-year quarterback threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns, demonstrating an ability to effectively distribute the ball to numerous receivers. He connected with 10 different pass-catchers during Sunday’s comeback victory.

Fantasy Football Fizzlers

  • QB Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans: Despite his accuracy in an overtime win against the Chargers, Tannehill managed only one passing touchdown and a rushing score. He’ll need to step up and continue winning, or the Titans might consider turning to Will Levis sooner rather than later.
  • RB Cam Akers, Los Angeles Rams: It’s a concerning situation for Akers, who was a healthy scratch following a lackluster Week 1 performance (barring a rushing touchdown) in Seattle. Kyren Williams has emerged as a standout with four touchdowns in two games. Akers might resurface as a fantasy option in 2023, possibly with a different team.
  • RB Alexander Mattison, Minnesota Vikings: The decision to let Dalvin Cook go in the preseason could be haunting the Vikings. Mattison managed just 28 rushing yards on eight carries in Philadelphia and also fumbled. He doesn’t seem suited for a workhorse role and appears more as a complementary piece.
  • TE Kyle Pitts, Atlanta Falcons: Fantasy managers are disappointed as Pitts continues to underperform. Instead of living up to his draft position as the top tight end, Pitts has only recorded four receptions for 59 yards in two games. Even Jonnu Smith outperformed Pitts for the Falcons in Week 2, which is cause for concern.
  • WR Jahan Dotson, Washington Commanders: Dotson began the season as a fantasy sleeper, and there’s still potential for that to pan out. However, through two games, he has accumulated just eight receptions and 62 yards, raising doubts about his fantasy value at this stage.
