Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has finalized India’s middle-order lineup for the upcoming 2023 World Cup. Following Shreyas Iyer’s outstanding century against Australia in the recent ODI series, Sehwag is confident that Iyer has secured the No. 4 spot in the XI. Sehwag also places KL Rahul at No. 5 and the versatile all-rounder Hardik Pandya at No. 6. This means that Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav miss out due to the strong performances of established players.

Sehwag explained his choices on Cricbuzz, stating, “KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya will be at Nos. 6 and 7, respectively. Therefore, Suryakumar won’t be filling any of those roles. But there is also No. 5. Rahul will bat at No. 5 and Hardik at No. 6, then the bowlers, assuming Hardik Pandya is your sixth bowler. We had assumed Ishan Kishan might fill in anywhere in the lineup, but if he starts at No. 4, Shreyas Iyer, Rahul, and Hardik would all bat at Nos. 4, 5, and 6, respectively.

Sehwag noted that if a middle-order slot becomes available, Ishan Kishan would be the preferred choice due to the lack of left-handed batting options in the team. Now it depends on how India perceives this combination and whether they believe Hardik would undoubtedly deliver 10 overs since it will offer India an extra bowler. As a result, Suryakumar cannot fill that position, and even if one were available, Ishan should be selected in front since he is a left-hander,” Sehwag added.

India’s first match in the Cricket World Cup 2023 is against Australia on October 8.
