India’s victorious ICC Cricket World Cup opener against Australia, KL Rahul, the middle-order batsman, disclosed Virat Kohli’s advice to approach the game with a Test cricket-like mindset due to challenging pitch conditions. Their partnership played a pivotal role in India’s win at Chepauk stadium in Chennai.

Rahul explained, There were not many conversations with Kohli. I had just taken a shower and was hoping for some rest after fielding, but I had to bat. Virat advised me to play in a Test cricket mode for a while. I’m happy to do it for the team. The pitch offered some assistance to fast bowlers initially. Later, dew became a factor. The ball skidded better, but the pitch remained two-paced. It wasn’t easy or too tough; it was a good cricket wicket, typical of South India, especially Chennai.

Regarding his last shot for six, Rahul said, “I hit it too well. I wanted to reach a hundred with a four and six. Hopefully, I can achieve that another time.”

As for the match itself, Australia saw an early setback when Mitchell Marsh was dismissed for a duck. However, David Warner (41 off 52 balls) and Steve Smith (46 off 71 balls) steadied the ship with a 69-run partnership. After Smith’s departure, Australia struggled, and Marnus Labuschagne (27) couldn’t provide the required impetus.

India’s spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja (3/28), Kuldeep Yadav (2/42), and Ravichandran Ashwin (1/34) wreaked havoc on Australia’s batting lineup, while the pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah (2/35), Mohammed Siraj (1/26), and Hardik Pandya (1/28) wrapped up the lower order. Australia slumped from 110/3 to 199 all out in 49.3 overs, with Mitchell Starc (28) attempting to help them complete their allotted 50 overs.

In pursuit of 200, India lost early wickets, including Ishan Kishan, skipper Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer, reducing them to 2/3. However, a remarkable 165-run partnership between Virat Kohli (85 off 116 balls) and KL Rahul (97* off 115 balls) guided India to a six-wicket victory. Josh Hazlewood (3/38) was the standout bowler for Australia.
