In December 2016, Sybrand Engelbrecht bid farewell to professional cricket. Fast forward seven years, at age 35, he marked his international debut, fittingly at the World Cup.

Sybrand’s enduring image in the public eye was the spectacular catch he took during the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. It’s a memory frequently revisited, though he humorously remarks, “I’m a little older now.” However, there’s much more to his story, life, and cricket, which remained hidden from the spotlight for the past 15 years.

With 54 first-class, 57 List A, and 45 T20 games in South Africa’s domestic scene, he realized his career wouldn’t skyrocket. So, he shifted focus, venturing into the corporate world at Fairtree, leveraging his finance and project management degree.

His cricket hiatus ended when he and his family moved to the Netherlands in 2021. Picking up the bat again helped him integrate into the community and reignited his passion.

Playing for the Voorburg Cricket Club, he excelled in Division 1 Topklasse finals. However, the question loomed: could he qualify for the national team?

While playing internationally was never his primary focus, it gained traction after the 2023 qualifiers. After checking his eligibility with the ICC, he made his debut for the Netherlands A team. With immense support, he set his sights on the World Cup.

His debut game against New Zealand didn’t provide much opportunity to shine, but his enthusiasm and commitment were evident. Juggling full-time work with international cricket, he remains uncertain about his long-term commitment but is confident about Dutch cricket’s progress.

Though Dutch cricket may not match the professionalism of larger nations, the dedicated management team is building a strong foundation. With more resources and time, they aim to become a force in international cricket.

Engelbrecht gears up for his next challenge against South Africa, facing some familiar faces on October 13
