The 2023 Cricket World Cup saw its second surprise upset, with South Africa falling to the Netherlands by a 38-run margin in a rain-affected match.

The Netherlands exceeded expectations, delivering a decisive blow to South Africa during the ODI World Cup 2023 on October 18th in Dharamsala.

Facing a challenging situation at 82/5 and 140/7, the Dutch team managed to reach 245/8 in a rain-affected 43-over match. In response, the Proteas fought hard but were eventually dismissed for 207, resulting in a 38-run loss. Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa, who had led his team to two initial victories in the tournament, acknowledged the pain of this defeat. He emphasized the importance of not forgetting this loss.

“You have to let the emotions sink in. There’s no point in trying to erase what’s happened. It’s going to hurt, and it should. But then you wake up tomorrow, face the day, and continue our journey. Our campaign is far from over, but we must embrace today’s emotions and face tomorrow with determination,” said Bavuma during the post-match presentation.

Bavuma stressed the need to control the extras in their bowling performance, as the South African side uncharacteristically gave away 31 extras, which equated to an additional five overs. He emphasized that such mistakes need to be rectified as they progress in the ODI World Cup. Additionally, he noted a dip in their fielding performance, an aspect not typical of their team.

The extras are within our control. Giving away 30 (31) extras, essentially adding five extra overs, is always detrimental. This is a matter we need to address—whether it’s a matter of skill or complacency. Nonetheless, it significantly impacted the outcome. While we displayed a clinical performance against Australia, the challenge was to replicate that today. Unfortunately, our fielding fell short of the standard. The level of fielding we showcased today compared to our performance against Australia is a noticeable difference. We need to have discussions about these aspects. The players need to reflect on where they stood mentally. The standard of fielding we exhibited today is certainly not what we aim to demonstrate,” added the right-handed batter.
