India had an impressive start to the 2023 Cricket World Cup by defeating Australia in their opening match, but the absence of Shubman Gill has raised concerns for captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid.

Reports suggest that Shubman Gill had been battling dengue fever for a few days, with the BCCI medical team closely monitoring his condition. As his platelet count dropped to around 70,000, he was transferred to a Chennai hospital but later recovered and was discharged.

An official from the Indian Cricket Board explained, “Once the count is below 100,000, you are admitted to a medical facility as a precautionary measure. Once the count again goes above 100,000, he would be discharged.”

Shubman Gill had to receive treatment at Chennai’s ‘Kauvery’ hospital, one of India’s finest medical facilities, and Team India’s doctor, Rizwan, stayed with him to ensure his speedy recovery.

Due to his illness, Shubman Gill was ruled out of India’s match against Afghanistan. The BCCI stated, “He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.”

Rohit Sharma clarified that Gill was unwell but not injured and expressed hope for his recovery.

In Shubman Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan partnered with Rohit Sharma in India’s first match against Australia. While the openers failed to make an impact, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul’s impressive partnership secured India’s victory.

Gill’s absence highlighted the importance of his contribution to India’s top order, as he had been in outstanding form, scoring the most runs in ODIs in 2023. His 2023 statistics included 1,230 runs in 20 games, with an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. Gill had also smashed six centuries, the most by any player in the 50-over format that year.

While it’s uncertain if Gill will miss the match against Pakistan, his absence would be a setback for India. His explosive innings against Pakistan in the Asia Cup had set the tone for India’s significant victory. Many cricket experts had predicted Gill to be the leading run-scorer in the World Cup due to his exceptional form.

Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan stated, “He’s been scoring hundreds, double hundreds, across formats. Very consistent. I’ve actually mentioned that, he’s going to be the leading scorer for this tournament.”

South African legend AB de Villiers also praised Gill’s technique and predicted he would be the top run-scorer in the World Cup.
