In New Delhi, South Africa enters their World Cup opener against Sri Lanka with a winning streak, aiming to shed their “chokers” label. Since emerging from apartheid-era isolation, their World Cup journey has been filled with mixed fortunes.

In 1992, they faced an impossible target due to rain revisions. Eleven years later, they misunderstood rain rules and exited their own tournament. In 1999, they suffered a farcical defeat to Australia in the semi-finals.

Key batsman David Miller dismissed the “chokers” tag but acknowledged past setbacks. Fortunately, seven squad members have no World Cup baggage, including skipper Temba Bavuma, who values their IPL experience.

Quinton de Kock, retiring after the tournament, thrived in India, and South Africa made a strong comeback against Australia recently. Sri Lanka, a 1996 World Cup winner, reached the tournament through qualifiers but suffered losses to India in the Asia Cup.

Captain Danuka Shanaka aims to make a statement, and Sri Lanka hasn’t faced South Africa since 2021. Sri Lanka lost both their World Cup warm-ups to Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
