In the 2023 World Cup match between India and Australia at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on October 8, Virat Kohli received a reprieve early in his innings. The right-handed batsman was dropped by Mitchell Marsh off Josh Hazlewood when he was on 12 runs. This incident occurred in the eighth over of India’s run chase. Hazlewood delivered a short-length ball that Kohli top-edged, and the ball landed between him and Marsh, who was running in from mid-wicket. Marsh hesitated, and the wicketkeeper Alex Carey also made an attempt to catch the ball but couldn’t hold on.

In a video shared by the International Cricket Council (ICC), Mohammed Siraj, known for his camaraderie with Kohli, appeared visibly nervous as Kohli survived the potential catch-out. The ICC captioned the Instagram post, highlighting the partnership between Kohli and KL Rahul, which helped India recover from their early setbacks.

The early blows came as India’s captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed without scoring. Mitchell Starc provided the initial breakthrough for Australia by dismissing Kishan caught in the slips. Hazlewood then took two wickets in the same over, getting Rohit out lbw and Iyer caught by David Warner at cover. With these early setbacks, India found themselves at 2/3 after just two overs.

At the time of writing, India had reached 100/3 after 25.3 overs, with Kohli (50 off 75) and Rahul (47 off 68) at the crease.

Australia, batting first, were bowled out for 199 in 49.3 overs. Steve Smith and David Warner contributed scores of 46 (71) and 41 (52), respectively, while Mitchell Starc and Marnus Labuschagne scored 28 (35) and 27 (41), respectively. Ravindra Jadeja was the standout performer with the ball for India, taking 3/28, while Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah claimed two wickets each. Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Siraj, and Hardik Pandya also took one wicket each.
