In the world of cricket, former India head coach Ravi Shastri didn’t mince his words as he critiqued Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi’s performance following India’s resounding victory over Babar Azam & Co. in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The match, held on Saturday, October 15, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, witnessed India thrashing Pakistan by seven wickets, maintaining their impeccable record against their arch-rivals in the ODI World Cup, now standing at 8-0.

Shaheen Afridi, who had previously posed a threat to India, had a nightmarish outing as Indian skipper Rohit Sharma dominated him from the outset. Rohit Sharma’s explosive innings of 86 runs propelled India to an emphatic win. The Hitman consistently attacked Shaheen, refusing to let him settle into the game.

Even though Shaheen managed to dismiss Rohit when the game was all but over and also claimed the wicket of Shubman Gill, his overall performance was disappointing, with figures of 36/2 in his six overs as Pakistan failed to defend their modest total of 191 runs.

In the aftermath of Pakistan’s crushing defeat, Ravi Shastri didn’t hold back his assessment of Shaheen’s performance. Shastri acknowledged Shaheen’s capabilities as a new-ball bowler but firmly asserted that he is not in the same league as the legendary Wasim Akram, a comparison often made by Pakistan fans.

Shastri remarked, “He is a good bowler, he can claim a wicket with the new ball. But you have to admit it, if Naseem Shah is not playing and the quality of Pakistan’s spin bowling is like this, then Shaheen Shah Afridi koi Wasim Akram nai hai (Shaheen is a good bowler and can take wickets with the new ball but he is no Wasim Akram).

He continued, “Acche bowler hai. Lekin itna bhi jyaada chadane ka koi zaroorat nahi hai. Jab hai theek thak, toh bolna chahiye woh theek thaak hai. Chadha ke nahin bithana chahiye ki bohot zabardast hai. Yeh nahi hai! Yeh maan na padega. (He is a good bowler but there is no need to hype him so much. He is just a good player, and we need to stick to calling him that. There is no need to call him a great player because he is not).”

Despite the high expectations placed on Shaheen Afridi as Pakistan’s leading pacer, he has yet to make a significant impact in the ongoing World Cup, securing only four wickets in three matches. Pakistan will be hoping for stronger performances from him in the matches ahead.
