Pakistan’s head coach, Grant Bradburn, expressed confidence in the team’s top-order batting, but Fakhar Zaman, the only Pakistani to score an ODI double century, may face exclusion due to recent struggles. Pakistan’s opening partnerships have been dismal, with just 35 as their highest in the last five matches, and only one century stand in 16 games this year.

Left-handed opener Fakhar managed only 12 runs in a partnership of 15 with Imam-ul-Haq during Pakistan’s 81-run victory against the Netherlands. Fakhar has struggled with scores, with a best of just 33 in his last 11 innings, following three successive centuries against New Zealand earlier this year.

For the upcoming game against Sri Lanka, Fakhar is likely to be replaced by Abdullah Shafique, who had a half-century in their previous encounter at the Asia Cup in September, a match won by Sri Lanka.

Bradburn remains hopeful that the top-order will find their form soon, emphasizing their faith in the batting lineup. He acknowledged that they haven’t yet achieved the desired results during the powerplay.

Despite the struggles, Bradburn praised Sri Lanka, a team they have faced frequently, acknowledging that Sri Lanka had the upper hand in white-ball cricket over the last year.

Sri Lankan batting coach Naveed Nawaz urged his bowlers to remain positive after conceding a record World Cup total of 428 against South Africa in their first match. He emphasized the need to evaluate their execution and identify areas for improvement, especially in terms of converting starts into substantial scores. Despite the challenge, Nawaz recognized Pakistan as a strong opposition and noted that both teams were familiar with each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
