The Pakistan Cricket Board has unveiled its 15-member roster for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, confirming the unfortunate absence of the injured Naseem Shah.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off in India on October 5, with Pakistan’s inaugural match against the Netherlands the following day.

Naseem Shah, a pivotal figure in Pakistan’s recent cricket endeavors, is slated for shoulder surgery following an injury that forced him to withdraw from the Asia Cup during Pakistan’s encounter with India on September 10. This setback is expected to sideline him for an extended period.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s chief selector, shared the disheartening news, stating, “Unfortunately, the report we have from our doctors indicates that Naseem will be out for a longer duration than just the World Cup.”

Shah himself expressed his disappointment through a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “With a heavy heart, I’m sharing that I will not be part of this amazing team representing our beloved country.”

In Naseem Shah’s absence, Hasan Ali, 29, has been brought in. Ali’s last appearance in a one-day international (ODI) was in June 2022. His most recent outing for Pakistan was during the second Test match against New Zealand in January this year.

Inzamam explained, “If you look at how Hasan Ali performed in the LPL [Lanka Premier League] and other matches, he has performed better than most. He is an experienced bowler who has excelled in major events for Pakistan, and he brings energy and team spirit to the squad.”

Several other changes have been made to the squad due to injuries. Muhammad Hasnain and Ihsanullah have also been omitted from the roster.

Usama Mir, who made his ODI debut earlier this year, has been included as an additional leg-spinner, while Mohammad Haris is among the reserves.

Inzamam clarified his decision, stating, “I have not made any major changes. The team has been playing with this combination for the last two years, and if I tried to disrupt the team within three weeks of my appointment, that would not be advisable.”

The announcement of the Pakistan squad comes in the wake of Muhammad Hafeez’s resignation from the Pakistan cricket technical committee, further fueling speculation about tensions surrounding the squad selection process.
