Bangladesh National Cricket Team suffered a significant setback as captain and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan sustained an injury during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023’s 11th match against New Zealand, led by Kane Williamson. The match took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 13, resulting in a crushing 8-wicket loss for the Bangla Tigers.

They struggled in all aspects of the game, managing to score only 245/9 while Mushfiqur Rahim (66), Mahmudullah (41), and Shakib Al Hasan (40) were the top three contributors with the bat.

Despite dismissing Rachin Ravindra early, Bangladesh’s defense crumbled against Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, and Daryl Mitchell. The Kiwis showcased brilliant batting and clinched their third consecutive win in 42.5 overs. Post-match, Shakib Al Hasan’s absence during the presentation was noted, and the reason was disclosed by star batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto.

After the match, Najmul Hossain Shanto took Shakib Al Hasan’s place and disclosed that the all-rounder had undergone scans on his left quad. “He is going for his scans. We will know after that,” Shanto told Ian Bishop.

Regarding his team’s performance, Shanto acknowledged a poor batting display, emphasizing the need for greater responsibility. “We didn’t bat well. We didn’t start well. We batted poorly even in the last game in the first 10-15 overs. The wicket looks good. Some bounce with the new ball. We have to bat a little responsibly,” he stated.

Nevertheless, Shanto commended the Bangladesh pacers for their performance, even though the BlackCaps won the run-chase comfortably.

Improvement in our fast bowling department is significant. Careful batting in the first 10-15 overs can yield better results. Our pacers performed well. Shakib Al Hasan, who bowled his full quota of 10 overs, contributed by taking a crucial wicket of Devon Conway before leaving the field, having conceded 54 runs.
