Aiden Markram etched his name in history by smashing the fastest century in the World Cup’s ODI history as South Africa posted a colossal total of 428-5 in their match against Sri Lanka. The foundation for this mammoth total was laid by Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen. However, it was Aiden Markram who stole the spotlight with a record-breaking performance at the grandest stage of One Day International (ODI) cricket, the World Cup.

South Africa, under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma, kicked off their World Cup campaign against the 1996 champions, Sri Lanka. In an electrifying display at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Markram played a thrilling innings, scoring 106 runs and achieving his third ODI century. His blazing century came off just 49 balls, making him the fastest centurion in the history of the ODI World Cup. Markram surpassed Kevin O’Brien, the previous record holder, who had achieved the feat in 50 balls against England during the 2011 World Cup, which was also hosted by India.

In this high-scoring encounter, South Africa’s batting trio of Markram, De Kock, and Van der Dussen recorded centuries, setting multiple records in the process. South Africa surpassed Australia’s previous record for the highest total in World Cup history, showcasing their dominance with the bat. Moreover, this match marked the first time in World Cup history that three players slammed centuries in a single innings.

Van der Dussen, reflecting on Markram’s performance, described it as incredible and praised his ability to adapt to the conditions. He emphasized that the team played to their strengths and acknowledged the formidable finishing capabilities of players like Klaasen, Markram, and Miller, who are among the best finishers in the world.
