Shubman Gill’s Chances Improve for India-Pakistan Clash Amid Dengue Recovery

The anticipation surrounding Shubman Gill’s potential role in the high-stakes India-Pakistan showdown in Ahmedabad has taken an encouraging turn, thanks to Captain Rohit Sharma’s assertion that Gill now has a ‘99% chance’ of making an appearance in the game.

Gill’s participation was in jeopardy due to his battle with dengue fever, causing him to miss India’s initial two matches in the World Cup. Notably, he didn’t make the trip from Chennai to Delhi for the second match and instead, he flew to Ahmedabad for an individual net session just two days ahead of the crucial game.

On the eve of the match, Gill rejoined the Indian squad for practice. He engaged in a warm-up foot net game and subsequently moved to the outdoor nets facility. During his session, he faced deliveries from the likes of Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, and the team’s throwdown specialists. While he appeared comfortable against the spinners, he seemed less assured against pace, even when facing throwdowns from left-arm bowlers Nuwan Seneviratne and Dayananda.

Gill’s first net session lasted approximately 40 minutes, after which he displayed signs of exhaustion. He took a break on the grass, sipping water and required the attention of Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathour. An attempt to resume batting against left-arm orthodox net bowlers was short-lived, as he appeared sluggish in his movements. Gill even had another net bowler stationed behind the stumps to retrieve balls he missed or left alone. This second session concluded after a mere five minutes, as Gill decided to call it a day.

However, Gill did reappear at the main stadium, participating in a slip-catching drill with fielding coach T. Dilip. During this stint, he exhibited more mobility compared to the end of his net session. A spectacular diving stop during the drill earned him praise from coach Dilip and his close friend Ishan Kishan, who was supervising the activity. Intriguingly, Kishan, India’s current opener, refrained from batting in the nets on the eve of the match.

The Indian team has ample reasons to welcome Gill back into the playing XI, notably his stellar performance against Shaheen Afridi in the previous encounter between the two teams in Colombo. Gill also boasts an impressive track record at the Narendra Modi Stadium, playing for his home franchise, the Gujarat Titans. In the recent IPL season, he accumulated 572 runs from nine matches, featuring two centuries, three half-centuries, and an impressive strike rate of 172.81.

Despite the positive signs, the final decision regarding Gill’s participation in the match is expected to be made closer to the game. India remains cautious about rushing his return, considering that they have two-thirds of their league matches still to be played following this crucial clash.
