Ex-cricketer Analyzes Kishan’s Evolving Role: A Slow Start, Then Soaring Impact for Team India

A retired cricketer praises Ishan Kishan’s distinctive role in Team India’s batting lineup throughout the current T20I series against Australia

India has kicked off their post-World Cup campaign impressively, securing a 2-0 lead in the ongoing five-match T20I series against Australia. After their World Cup final loss to Australia, ending their unbeaten streak, India made a strong comeback. In the second T20I, the hosts successfully restricted Australia to 191/9 in 20 overs, chasing down the 236-run target and winning by 44 runs. Ravi Bishnoi and Prasidh Krishna displayed excellent bowling performances, each securing three-wicket hauls. The innings saw notable contributions from Ruturaj Gaikwad (58), Yashasvi Jaiswal (53), and Ishan Kishan (52).

In the second T20I, Ishan Kishan continued his resurgence, following a half-century in the first T20I, where India secured a two-wicket victory. In the initial T20I, Kishan scored a brisk 58 off 39 balls, a marked improvement from his World Cup performance, marred by a failure to capitalize on Shubman Gill’s absence due to dengue.

Former India cricketer Abhishek Nayar, commenting on JioCinema, commended Kishan’s impact in the T20I series and analyzed his strategy. Nayar remarked, “Ishan Kishan has embraced a completely different role. Although accustomed to batting in the middle order at No. 4 and 5 for India, he now takes on the No. 3 position in T20Is. What’s intriguing is the pattern he has developed in his batting that leads to success. Initially, he takes his time, as seen today with 17 off 19 deliveries. Then, he accelerates, efficiently covering the dot balls played early on. As a wicketkeeper-batter, he brings in flexibility to score runs, adapting to any batting position.

Tuesday in Guwahati, both teams are set to clash, with India eyeing a series-clinching victory to secure a 3-0 lead. The Australians, on the other hand, aim to mount a comeback and narrow the series to 1-2.

In this ongoing series, key players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Mohammed Shami have been given a rest. Suryakumar Yadav has assumed the captaincy, showcasing commendable leadership skills. Reflecting on the second T20I, he stated, “The boys are not putting too much pressure on me. They are taking onus. I told them before, be prepared to bat first. There was a lot of dew. We talked to defend it later. When I saw Rinku came in to bat in the last game, the composure he showed was brilliant. It reminded me of someone (laughs). Everyone knows the answer (laughs again).
